Tiësto

Tijs Michiel Verwest better known as “Tiësto” is Dutch musician, DJ and record producer of progressive trance, trance, progressive house, psytrance and electronic dance music “EDM”. He was born the 17 of January of 1969 in Breda, Netherlands. He has released work under various names but the most known work is under the name DJ Tiësto.

Following his years of working along DJs like Armin Van Buuren (as Alibi) and Ferry Corsten (as Gouryella), Tiësto decided to branch out on his own. He founded Black Hole Recordings along Arny Bink where he released the Magik and In Search of Sunrise CD series. Tiësto later leaves the label to set up Musical Freedom. Tiësto was the first DJ to hold the DJ Magazine’s No 1 DJ in the World title three consecutive years (2002, 2003, 2004). His fame arrived in the late 1990s after his set at the first ID&T Innercity party (Live at Inner-city: Amsterdam RAI), and it continued to skyrocket in the early 2000s following his six-hour “Tiësto Solo” sets, which he performed without any other DJs or opening acts.

 In 2004 he released his second studio album, entitled “Just Be.” The album contained a #1 hit, its single “Traffic,” which was the first instrumental track to reach the top spot in his homeland of Holland in 23 years. The album also brought a new trance anthem known as “Adagio for Strings,” which is a remake of Samuel Barbers classical song “Adagio for Strings.” In addition to this, a huge event made the release of the album “Parade of the Athletes” possible, the 2004 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in which he became the first DJ to perform live at the stadium.

 In 2007 Tiësto released his fourth studio album, “Elements of Life” which was a great success even though it had fewer singles. The album was nominated in the category “Best Electronic/Dance Album” at the 50th Grammy Awards. He released “Kaleidoscope” in 2009 and features the song “I Will Be Here” with Australian dance act Sneaky Sound System, which was released as the lead single. The album entered the Dutch album charts at #2. It also debuted at #20 on the UK album charts.

He has been honored with countless national and international best DJ awards, being named Officer of the “Order of Orange-Nassau” by the Dutch Royalty, and being voter by the Dutch people as their 40th greatest citizen of all time. He was awarded with a national Dutch prize of the Golden Harp. In 2008 Tiësto was nominated for a Grammy Award for his album Elements of Life. He has won 48 awards out of 61 nominations. Tiësto has been active in the industry since 1985-present. He has work with labels Noculan, Basic Beat, Lighting, SXV Music, Black Hole, Ultra and Musical Freedom. With associated acts with Gouryella, Kamaya Painters.

As a listener, Tiësto gives me the impression that the party is just getting started. His tracks are great for workouts because of their length and up beat tempo. As an industry professional Tiësto has reminded me that there is no limits to the possibilities in transducing love in the art form of music, thanks for reading!

Good job on your week 1 welcome and Pet Sounds blog entries! Your post describes very well the music and image of The Beach Boys prior to Pet Sounds. The Beach Boys work focus prior to Pet Sounds was truly all in girls and surf. The post discusses well Brian Wilson and his role in Pet Sounds. Mr. Wilson was indeed the genius mastermind behind the Pet Sounds project. It’s amazing how Phil Spector influenced Mr. Wilson towards the creation of Pet Sounds. I like how you discuss the characteristics of the Pet Sounds album. I agree with your statement; “Pet Sounds is a great album”. Good job describing the impression Pet Sounds made in you as a listener and as a professional. I ‘would like if you to shared more about how you think this album could influence your future projects. The impact of the Moog Synthesizer is still noticeable in today’s electronic music scene. The Moog Synth is one of the most amazing instruments ever developed! It’s undeniable how the Moog Synth instrument changed electronic music forever. Good job on discussing the impact and characteristics of Mr. Moog’s innovations and contributions to the electronic music genre. Prior to “What’s Going On”, Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. had a confirmed commercial status and a superstar image after reaching #8 on the R&B charts and #46 on the pop charts with “Stubborn Kind of Fellow” in 1962. Benson and Al Cleveland presented “What’s Going On” to Gaye and in it he found a way to channel his sorrow for Tammi Terrell, his singing partner who had died of a brain tumor, his empathy for his brother’s plight, and his own professional frustration into an artistic statement addressing the social and spiritual anguish he saw sweeping the real world, the one that existed outside Motown. The shootings of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy had hit him hard. The violence in the streets of Detroit in 1967, in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention of 1968, and at Kent State University in 1970 seemed like eruptions of insanity. Seeing a man walk on the moon when there was economic desperation within two miles of his own home was surreal and depressing. What the hell was going on?

Berry Gordy was in vacations in the Bahamas when Gaye called him to tell him about the album and how it was ready for release. Gordy ask Gaye; “Why he wanted to ruin his career with that type of album?” Gordy was the biggest obstacle Marvin had trying to release “What’s Going On”.

Gaye was furious enough to change the way he dressed because he didn’t want to be labeled as part of Motown any longer. Gaye wanted to stay away from anything that could reassemble Motown’s standard beat. He brought in the veteran big band drummer Chet Forest, augmented by a phalanx of percussionists: Jack Ashford on tambourine, Eddie Brown on bongos and congas, Earl Derouen on congas and Jack Brokensha on vibes and assorted percussive toys. Marvin was down in the Snakepit playing piano and leading the rhythm section himself. Marvin stated “I will quit recording until “What’s Going On” is released”. In the meantime Gaye decided to become a professional football player for his hometown Detroit Lions.

One characteristic that sets this album apart from other soul recordings of the mid 1960-70 is the multilayered lead vocal. This was an actual mistake that became a hallmark on Marvin Gaye vocal style. Another characteristic is the album success of 100,000 copies sold in the first 24 hours. My impression of “What’s Going On” as a listener is mind opening. I can consider this as part of history even outside of music. As a professional “What’s Going On” represents a great example of the determination needed in order to succeed in the entertainment industry. Brian Peter George Eno was influenced by the world and everything in it! In 1975 Eno was walking home from the studio after finishing a recording session that night. As he walked away a random thought came to Eno “What if this was my last recording? Right before it happened Eno had the thought of the possibility of that being his last recording. Eno said; “If that song was the last thing that I ever record, would I mind having that as my last piece of work?” and it almost was. A hundred yards later he slipped on the rainy sidewalk and fell into the street. As Eno thought about how he brought that onto himself a taxi hit him at approximately 40 miles per hour. The car ran Eno’s legs and snapped his head back into a parked vehicle like a dart.

Eno survived but had a long ways until full recovery. Once Eno was stable enough he was sent home where he was disoriented with pills and pain. On day Eno decided to get up and play some music because he thought that would help him deal with the pain. He dragged himself to the turntable and he dropped the needle on an 18th century harp record. Eno made it back to bed to then notice that only one speaker worked and the volume of the music was very low. There was no way he could get back up so he just enjoyed the notes that he could listen to over the rainstorm sound outside his house. He was intrigued with how some notes where noticeable and then they fade into an ambience composed of the sound of the rain and the colors of the lights becoming a new atmospheric whole. This is what we know today as Ambient Music.

One of the projects that set apart Eno recordings from other recordings is the 1973 ambient music album “No Pussyfooting”. This album was created in collaboration with Robert Fripp. Robert used his Frippertronics technique, which consists of two reel-to-reel tape recorders side by side. Fripp played his guitar over Eno’s loops playing from deck 1 that will play back by deck 2 and then routed back in the deck 1 to create a long tape delay. Eno recorded Fripp’s guitar with and without loops creating a dense multilayer piece of ambient music.

Another project that sets Brian Eno apart is “Music For Airports” This was the first of four albums released in Eno’s “Ambient” series, a term which he coined to differentiate his minimalistic approach to the album’s material and “the products of the various purveyors of canned music”. The idea for this album came to Eno while waiting at the Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany in the mid-1970s. He had to spend several hours there and was extremely annoyed by the uninspired sound atmosphere. The two albums are Ambient Music but they are both very unique.

As a listener Eno has amazed my ears with such a unique combination of sounds. As a professional I can now say that I have someone I can look up to when it comes to creativity and using the studio as an instrument. Eno’s approach to crafting music is definitely inspiration for any upcoming producer, thanks for reading!
